Rethinking vulnerability and humanitarian assistance in the pastoral drylands

Samuel Derbyshire, a post-doctoral researcher funded by SPARC and the Jameel Observatory for Food Security Early Action, participated at an online and in-person seminar on ‘Rethinking vulnerability and humanitarian assistance in the pastoral drylands’ in Nairobi, Kenya on June 12th.
Sam joined colleagues including Dr Rahma Hassan, a post-doctoral researcher at the Tufts – Feinstein International Center, who led the seminar. The event explored how vulnerability is framed and understood in humanitarian responses in the drylands, with a focus on its application to pastoral contexts. At the event, Dr Hassan delved into her recent research, which calls for new ways to approach both the concept of vulnerability and external assistance by humanitarian actors.
The event was organised by the Jameel Observatory for Food Security Early Action, the Dryland Futures Academy and the Rift Valley Institute, and is part of a monthly series hosted by the British Institute in Eastern Africa.
