SPARC partner the Nigeria-based Fulbe Development and Cultural Organization has been officially recognised for its work on education, peacebuilding and land tenure security in drylands by the United Nations Positive Livelihood Award Centre (UN-POLAC).

FUDECO received the accolade in part for its action-based research, funded by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), to advance gender equality in fragile food systems. This includes its work with pastoralist communities to scale education and peacebuilding activities in Nigeria's drylands.

The award was given in a ceremony in Lagos, Nigeria, to mark this year’s Human Rights Day (December 10). FUDECO is a humanitarian and development non-governmental organisation and a participatory action research network that works with pastoralists in 13 states across Nigeria.

Sarli Sardo Nana, FUDECO Founder and Chairman, represented by Alh. Idris Namalle at the awards, said the recognition will encourage FUDECO to continue to do more work on peacebuilding across communities. “There can be no sustainable development without peace," he added.

UN-POLAC Director-General Prof. Obong Halo B. Eton, represented by Pastor Dr. Z. A. Ogunsanya, said the Centre is committed to human rights and sustainable development, adding that Human Rights Day is not only a time for reflection but a call to action.

Dr. Muhammed Adamu Dodo, UN-POLAC’s 1st Deputy Country President in Nigeria, said: “I am delighted that FUDECO’s groundbreaking efforts in promoting peace, unity, education and Fulbe cultural heritage have been recognised by UN-POLAC, thanks to the exceptional leadership of Sarli Sardo Nana.

"This award is one of about half a dozen unsolicited awards conferred on FUDECO and its leaders in the past few years in recognition of the organisation’s modest humanitarian development efforts. FUDECO’s innovative initiatives in tackling the issues facing pastoralist communities to foster sustainable peace, security and development are legendary.”
